Roller rama — event branding poster redesign

CONTEXT

This assignment was a project from the 3rd semester Graphic Design Class. The purpose of this project was to create a series of advertisements for a fictitious event of our choosing. The style of the advertisements should reflect the type of event. It should also follow the typographic hierarchy rules, as well as include given information, such as location and date.

The event that I created for this project is called Roller Rama. It is a roller disco event where people could dress up in costume, skate around, listen to music and have fun.

INSPIRATION

The moodboard created for this project included some images that served as inspiration for the overall look of the event branding. My two main inspirations were candy packaging from the 1970s and bubble lettering found on glam rock album covers.

LOGO DESIGN PROCESS

For the logo, I wanted to utilize bubble lettering for the event name but also incorporate elements of a roller skate. It was a bit of a challenge to come up with something that flowed well together.

CHALLENGES

The biggest challenge I had when completing this project, was fitting all the text in way that was legible, and that fit with all other assets. The only text that was provided and required was the date and time, the location and the schedule. The schedule was definitely a challenge to fit with everything.

REVISITING THE PROJECT

This is a project that I really enjoyed creating and the outcome was successful. However, this project was completed during the 3rd semester of school and I have definitely learned a lot over the past year. My focus for refining this poster was to remove a lot of the unnecessary text, focus more on typography and clean up the overall look.

NEW CHALLENGES

I initially planned on simply rearranging the assets that were already present on the poster, and removing the large amount of text. However, the more I moved things around, the more I found things that I wasn’t pleased with. The green background with the fuchsia logo seemed too saturated, and there was a lot going on in general. This led to a complete overhaul.

NEW INSPIRATION

Some new elements that served as inspiration were split fountain posters, vintage trading cards vintage boxing match posters.

DESIGN CHANGES

I first added a pink background behind the logo, which led me to lighten up the pink and orange on the logo. I then created the gradient by blending the three colours. I made the text a lot bolder and noticeable. I kept the stars, but incorporated them in a uniform way.

ADDITIONAL PIECES

I created two supplementary pieces that would be an addition to the event poster. These two pieces are items that would be for sale at the event. The purpose was to show the elements of the branding in different layouts that related to the theme of the event.

EMBROIDERED PATCHES

2 different variations of embroidered patches. I chose to create these, due to how popular patches were during the 1970s.

VINYL RECORD

Modelled after K-Tel compilation records, the Roller Rama album would theoretically be a compilation of songs played throughout the event. I wanted to include something that would be a fun item that people could take home with them, that would always remind them of the event. It also fits well with the 70s theme.

PROJECT'S SUCCESS

Overall, I think the revised design is more successful than the original. I was initially afraid that by removing the majority of the elements, this would take away the whole 70s vibe, however, I feel that the revised poster has even more of a glam rock/roller skating look. Also, by removing the unnecessary text, I was able to give space to the most important information.
